Calliope Concert Series

Despite the prominence of a select few women musicians like Shakira, Brittany Spears, and BeyoncĂ©, women represent a significant minority of musicians in the US. According to the last census only 34% of professional musicians in America are women. This number is especially odd when you consider that there are more women than men in the US. In response to all this, I’m joining forces with the Des Moines Social Club for a celebration of women in music.

Calliope is a Greek muse, a mythical creature who inspires creativity in art and music. The Calliope Concert Series is designed both to raise awareness of women’s music and empower the younger generation of great women musicians right here in central Iowa. Between January and April, Roxi and the DMSC will put on four concerts featuring fabulous women artists from around Iowa and the US. For more info, see Joe Lawler’s recent blog post on Metromix.

Special thanks to our early opt-in sponsors: Joseph’s Jewelers, Found Things, and Vanity and Glamour. There are still a few sponsorship spots available. If you’re a business owner and would like an opportunity to connect with the arts demographic, this could be a great option for you. Aside from blog post mentions, like above, there will be many outlets for media exposure over a four month period. Check out out the sponsor sheet for more information (.pdf).
